Poets, Prophets, & Preachers: Twitter Highlights

If you only read one of my posts about Poets, Prophets, & Preachers, make it my next post, which will have my overall reflections. If you’re only gonna read two, then make this post the other one you read.
Yesterday I spent six hours in the DFW airport. During that time I fnished up posting my PPP notes to the blog and also got a chance to go back and read the entire Twitter feed from PPP - great stuff. Here are the highlights for me (words in italics are mine. when appropriate I tried to attribute the quotes to the correct speaker).
—————————
ckdean2 In genesis 1 & 2, there is no “somewhere else”. Rob Bell
bcmouser Where and how you begin/end the story will shape and determine what story you’re telling. Rob Bell
jimkastkeat If you begin in Gen3 the story is about the removal of sin. If you begin in Gen1 the story is about restoring shalom. Rob Bell // I love Rob’s compare/contrast of starting with Gen 1&2 or Gen 3. I’ve heard this message before, but not in this way. An excellent way to communicate it. We must start the story in the proper place.
timgrandstaff If the story you tell starts in Gen. 3 it becomes what you are not. If it starts in Gen 1 it becomes what you are #Rob Bell
jimkastkeat If you begin in Gen3 the story is about disembodied evacuation. If you begin in Gen1 the story is about participatory physicality. Rob Bell
jimkastkeat The story is about anticipating the coming day when heaven and earth are one again. Heaven is where God s storing the earth’s future. Rob Bell
mtnprofet ” the story of Jesus’ resurrection is about God reaffirming the goodness of creation” ~ RB // Rob tells such a hopeful story - it’s good for my soul.
mtnprofet “the story is about God…. renewing, restoring, reconciling….” ~ RB
theofem A big generous view of God! Rob Bell // I love this phrasing.
kalebheitzman A sermon, then, brings hope rooted in engagement not escape, not in evecuation but reclamation, not in leaving but overcoming. Rob Bell // Overcoming! I like that language here.
kalebheitzman The ressurection is a new creation bursting forth in this one. Rob Bell // This goes well with Pete’s later comments about resurrection (see below).
mtnprofet “the story is about anticipating the coming day when heaven and earth are one again” ~ RB
kalebheitzman A sermon, then, is about helping people see this new resurrection creation with thier own eyes. Rob Bell
janamepperson: “Hope is not rooted n escape but n engagement, not leaving but n staying & overcoming” -Rob Bell // Overcoming - more good language.
MandyCooper “Don’t fulfill your dreams. Put youself in a position where you can see new ones.” Peter Rollins
zlind76 Pete Rollins is on fire. Amazing. // You will certainly begin to see my bias here. I just thought the praise for Pete was overwhelming - had to include it here.
josh_allard We think church on Sunday is an act of resistance, but it’s really what excuses Monday through Saturday. Peter Rollins // He says this in a room full of preachers! I love it! I just hope they were actually listening - this should be a difficult statement for a pastor to hear. Can’t just blow it off.
jimkastkeat We don’t change within the system but rather the entire system needs to change. Peter Rollins // Are we catching the revolution? Or are we just enjoying Pete’s accent. Don’t miss the readical nature of Pete’s critique of Christianity/church.
mborgetti what I’ve heard and learned in the past two hours is enough transformative content for two year worth of conversation. Peter Rollins!
jimkastkeat The text is like a wonderful piece of art. It’s not that it lacks meaning, but rather it is full of meaning. Peter Rollins
mtnprofet our speaking can be the “giving of salt to make people thirsty” ~ PR
mtnprofet “the sermon should draw people into a transformative conversation” ~ PR // I like this phrasing a lot - transformative conversation. For me, all of this applies to much more than sermons.
pastormelissa Christianity is a religion that critiques religion. Peter Rollins
marshillorg: Conversion is not just changing the mind but changing the actual self. Peter Rollins
joshuawatson The congregation can smell your theological starting point (orignl sin or blessing) beneath the words of your sermon. Rob Bell
speelunk Soil and spirit are one- the real action isn’t “someplace else” So preach an invitation to reconcile, renew creation, restore Shalom. Rob Bell
speelunk A sermon should help people see with their own eyes the new creation that’s breaking forth in the midst of the old one. Rob Bell
theofem: “Whatever you believe, be open to being wrong” Peter Rollins
jimkastkeat The role of the church is to create space to facilitate environments where change can happen. // Not sure who this was from - Pete maybe?
speelunk: A faith collective should be a flash mob that instantiates the new creation & then vanishes w/o an institutional trace. Peter Rollins // Nice. I don’t remember hearing Pete use this language before.
mattjennings RT: “I get concerned that some people so dead set on leaving earth, will, on their way up, pass God as he’s coming down.” -Rob Bell // This is a great quote - one of the best of the conference for me. Hilarious.
marshillorg: The story is about God renewing all things, restoring all things, reconciling all things. Rob Bell // I may have posted this already, but it’s worth reading twice.
mtnprofet “we live in an age where multiple eras are stacked on top of one another” ~ SH Shane Hipps
dpark75: shane hipps is not a fan of twitter, but i think he underestimates it as a medium to share with the world what we see. // I don’t think Shane is going to make many friends with his critique of Twitter. I just don’t feel quite right about Shane, even though I like his basic message and enjoyed his first book. He seems too hesitant to me. Too wary of technology, social media, etc. He says he does not mean to critique what’s going on, but just to help us understand it. I think he really means this, but again, I just think he’s too cautious. Or maybe I am not cautious enough - could be.
powers2008 shane says twitters consequences may out weigh the benefits
dpark75 out of about 1000 attendees, i counted 6 asian americans, and about the same number of blacks. wonder what the deal is?
kalebheitzman The printing press gave birth to the church as a lecture hall. Depressing. Shane Hipps
theofem sadly, a pastors conference is the only conference that the mens bathroom has a longer line then the womens // Definitely wish there were more women at the conference, but that seems to be the nature of things right now. Hopefully we are improving. But I think we must not just allow this to slide by unnoticed. I think this is a significant part of why Christianity is increasingly irrelevant today.
jimkastkeat Image vs. Influence - that Shane Hipps character got me thinking. (but he will not get me to give up Twitter) // More Twitter backlash!
lswarner: twitter is creating a global coffeehouse. - Shane Hipps // Maybe Shane doesn’t like coffee?
markstegall: Rob Bell twice in one day = drinking from a fire hose // Two and a half hour afternoon session = I’m going to lose my mind. Shane, brother, you’re the one who just told us that doesn’t work anymore! We can’t handle it - too much Twitter! Please keep your talks to 140 characters or less! Ok, that was probably to much…I actually like Shane’s first book (haven’t read the second one).
jimkastkeat “Everything in a sermon is related to everythin else in th sermon.” Why just the sermon? Why not the whole gathering/experience. // Amen, brotha. It’s pretty crazy watching all these pastors think the sermon is so important and needs to be reclaimed. I think the spoken word is obviously important, but let’s stop kidding ourselves, the sermon is in decline.
jimkastkeat Teaching is great, but I want more than a sermon driven Sunday. Anyone with me? // Keep it comin’ Jim. Everyone I talked to at PPP got to hear an earful from me about how I’m not convinced the sermon needs to be reclaimed. I don’t think anyone agreed with me, so I’m glad to see someone is with me.
jimkastkeat A sermon creates a picture, a space an image, an experience, an encounter, a world, a place that allows ppl to find themselves in it. Rob Bell
timgrandstaff A sermon is like building a cathedral of words that invites people to come into it & say “ah its beautiful” #Rob Bell // or “ah, I’m falling asleep…too many words…” Not really, Rob doesn’t put people to sleep, but most sermons do. And I don’t think the primary answer is that we must reclaim the sermon. Actually, this is a great quote.
timgrandstaff When you define yourself by what your are not, thats a dangerous road to walk down #Rob Bell // I’m against sermons. Oh, wait…
timgrandstaff Ypu have people in your church with skills and resources who would consider it an honor converting them into helping you preach Rob Bell // Alright, we’re getting close to acknowledging that a church consists of more than just pastors!
jimkastkeat “Your job is to take notes, my job is to make that impossible.” Peter Rollins // If this is what you’re going for Pete, then you’re doing a great job.
DHBromley Christianity is fundamentally violent. Against principalities and powers, not flesh & blood. We’re not violent enough. Peter Rollins // One of the best quotes of the conference. Here’s a related post from Pete.
mtnprofet: sweet jesus…. pete rollins is awesome…. if you are not here… you should have been…
joshcrain Peter Rollins: more than worth the price of admission.
geneatalley: Whoa. God showed up at #ppp09 in a whirlwind named Peter Rollins.
steveheyduck My favorite Irish: 1. Peter Rollins; 2. U2. // 3. Father Tim
thochstetler Peter Rollins: “the church is the insurrectionary power that is trying to bring people into reconfiguration.” Peter Rollins // Insurrectionary power! Preach it Pete!
josh_allard Rob Bell is genius. Peter Rollins is a hero. Conference was brilliant. Go be better. // And Shane Hipps doesn’t like Twitter. Ok, that was totally uncalled for. Pretend I deleted it.
danielliterary Peter Rollins was so good he brought Rob Bell to tears today // Oh, so that’s who Pete ran into with the Segway when he sped off the side of the stage!
jonathanbell That was the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever been a part of.
chadah I think #ppp09 was the best conference/seminar I’ve ever been to.
markstegall: Poets, prophets & preachers was the best conference I’ve probably ever been to.
theofem “I deny the resurrection every time I turn my back on the poor or become a cog in a system of injustice” Peter Rollins // Probably the most retweeted quote from PPP - here’s the full quote. Honestly, I was a little surprised at the response to this, though I agree that it’s fantastic. I guess a lot of Evangelicals are just ready to hear this - at least the ones at PPP were.
joelharbarger: “Peter Rollins was a hurricane.” // I’m sticking with mad scientist.
